Today was played the final flight of the WSOP Online Main Event. GGNetwork set a new online poker record with a massive prize pool of almost 28 million dollars.
GGNetwork announced its partnership to host WSOP Online in June 2020. Shortly after that, the schedule was confirmed, and an ambitious $25M GTD Main Event was included with a $5,000 buy-in.
The event had 23 Day 1 flights scheduled, but each player was only allowed to fire three bullets. With a $4,750 + $250 buy-in, GGNetwork needed to draw a field of at least 5,264 players to cover the guaranteed prize pool.
The last flight was played on August 30 with 858 players, and after the late registration period ended, we spotted the final numbers:
The WSOP Online Main Event champion will take home nearly 4 million dollars, a WSOPE package, and the most valuable golden bracelet in the series.
The latest WSOP Main Event to draw a similar number of participants was the 2005 tournament, with 5,619 entries (Joe Hachem won the bracelet). Of course, this was in Vegas, and the buy-in was the usual $10,000.
In total, GGPoker earned in rake $1,450,500 just for organizing the Main Event, although we spotted massive overlays in the Silk Road promotion.
This wasn't the only record that GGNetwork broke during WSOP Online. Event #71: The Big 50 confirmed as the tournament with most participants in WSOP history with 44,576.
Unfortunately, this wasn't free of controversy as the site suffered several server failures that cost millions in compensations. Day 2 started on August 30, and stopped with 40 players who will return to the tables next Saturday to define a new world champion.
Among the famous players qualified for day two, we highlight:
