partypoker MILLION: what went wrong with the tournament?

partypoker MILLION was launched in mid-October 2019. This event was important because it was introduced as the successor to the original Sunday Million, held until 2006.

The event changed its structure several times (the last one was in early June), due to chronic overlays. Even Rob Yong said at the end of 2019 that if the situation didn't improve, then partypoker MILLION would have to be canceled.

It was necessary to wait until February 16 to witness the first edition of partypoker MILLION without overlays. Then, throughout spring, the guarantee was not covered, but the overlays weren't representative, mainly thanks to the boom.

But then summer came, traffic started to fall, and the last event played on June 29, 2020, lost the guaranteed prize pool by $82,000.

partypoker Main

This week, "MILLION" disappeared from the lobby. Instead, a new event called "partypoker Main" with the same multi-day structure and many satellites were added. The main difference is the guaranteed prize pool and the buy-in:

partypoker Main is a new multi-day event with a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool and a $109 buy-in.

It also has two smaller side events:

1. partypoker Micro $15kGTD for $2,2
2. partypoker Mini $100kGTD for $20.

In other words, the number of entries required to cover the GTD prize in the new tournament remains the same. Still, the buy-in is less than double. Therefore it can become more popular than partypoker MILLION.

Won't the partypoker million be back?

Rob Yong addressed the topic on his Twitter account. According to his statements, most likely partypoker MILLION is done for good:

1. partypoker is not ready to add many "day 1s" to hit the GTD;
2. There is no interest to affect ecology when WPT World Online Championships is so close;
3. Missed GTD every week since after WPT/SCOOP/WSOPC — so it's clearly not a popular format.
